Conditions We Treat

OCD

Get support for intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is much more than liking things neat or organized. It involves unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause real distress, and repeated actions or mental rituals that feel necessary to relieve it, even when part of you knows they do not make sense.

At Alliance Wellness Solutions, we take the time to understand what you are experiencing, without judgment, and help you find a way forward. Care is available in person at our Towson office and by telehealth anywhere in Maryland.

Obsessions and compulsions

Obsessions are intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that keep coming back and cause anxiety, disgust, or doubt. Compulsions are behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform to reduce that distress or prevent something bad from happening.

Compulsions may bring brief relief, but over time they tend to strengthen the cycle. OCD can take up hours of the day and affect relationships, work, and school.

Common themes

OCD can focus on almost anything. Some common themes include:

  • Contamination and germs
  • Fear of harming others
  • Checking locks, appliances, or safety
  • Symmetry and “just right” feelings
  • Counting or repeating
  • Unwanted intrusive thoughts
  • Reassurance seeking
  • Relationship or moral doubts

Many people with OCD feel deep shame about their thoughts and keep them secret. Having an intrusive thought does not mean you want it or would act on it. It is a common part of OCD, and it is something clinicians understand.

Signs it may be time to reach out

  • Thoughts or rituals take up a significant part of your day
  • You avoid people, places, or objects to prevent distress
  • You repeatedly seek reassurance from others
  • Rituals are affecting your work, school, sleep, or relationships
  • You feel exhausted by trying to control your thoughts

OCD often appears alongside anxiety or depression, and it can begin in childhood, the teen years, or adulthood.

How we help

A careful assessment

We start by understanding your symptoms, how long they have been present, and how they affect your life, and by looking at related concerns such as anxiety, mood, or ADHD. An accurate picture helps guide the right care.

Medication management

Medication can reduce the intensity of obsessions and compulsions for many people. Our psychiatric nurse practitioners can discuss whether medication may help, explain the options, and monitor your progress over time.

Therapy and specialized care

Therapy can help you understand the OCD cycle and respond differently to intrusive thoughts. The most well-established therapy for OCD is a specialized approach called exposure and response prevention (ERP), which gradually reduces the power of obsessions and the urge to perform rituals. When specialized therapy is appropriate, we help coordinate that care as part of your plan.

Support for families

Family members are often drawn into OCD without realizing it, by offering reassurance or helping with rituals. Family sessions can help loved ones understand the condition and learn how to support recovery, which is especially important for children and teens.

What to expect

  1. Reach out. Request a consult online or call our office. Our team will answer your questions and help you find a time that works.
  2. Your first appointment. We take the time to listen and to understand your concerns, your history, and your goals.
  3. A plan that fits. Together, we decide on next steps, whether that is medication management, therapy, coordination with specialized care, or a combination.
  4. Ongoing support. We check in on your progress and adjust your care as your needs change.

You are not your thoughts

OCD can be isolating, especially when the thoughts feel too embarrassing to say out loud. Talking with someone who understands is often the first step toward loosening their grip.

Maybe it’s time to talk to someone.
