Sports Therapy
Sports therapy supports athletes with performance anxiety, confidence, injury recovery, burnout and identity beyond their sport. Led by Tori Lesko, LMSW at Alliance Wellness Solutions.
Athletes dedicate countless hours to improving their strength, technique, endurance, and performance. But athletic success isn’t only physical. Confidence, focus, emotional regulation, resilience, and mental wellness all play an important role in how athletes perform and how they experience their sport.
At Alliance Wellness Solutions, our Sports Therapy program, led by Tori Lesko, LMSW, provides athletes with a supportive and confidential environment to address the unique emotional and psychological challenges associated with competition, performance, injuries, expectations, and life outside of sports.
Why Sports Therapy Matters
Athletes are often expected to be resilient, competitive, disciplined, and mentally tough. Those expectations can sometimes make it difficult to acknowledge when stress, anxiety, depression, or other emotional challenges are becoming overwhelming.
Seeking therapy isn’t a sign that an athlete lacks mental toughness. In many cases, developing the ability to recognize challenges, ask for support, and build effective coping strategies is an important part of becoming a more resilient athlete.
Sports therapy allows athletes to work on their mental wellness and emotional health with the same intention they bring to physical training.
How Can Sports Therapy Help?
Athletes may experience challenges that affect their performance, relationships, academics, work, or overall quality of life. Therapy can help with concerns such as:
- Performance and competition anxiety
- Fear of failure or making mistakes
- Perfectionism and high personal expectations
- Loss of confidence
- Negative self-talk
- Depression and anxiety
- Stress and emotional regulation
- Difficulty maintaining focus during competition
- Athletic burnout
- Pressure from coaches, teammates, family, or oneself
- Team and interpersonal conflicts
- Balancing athletics, academics, work, and relationships
- Coping with injuries and rehabilitation
- Fear of returning to competition following an injury
- Changes in playing time or athletic roles
- Transitioning out of competitive sports
- Identity and self-esteem concerns
Performance Anxiety & Mental Preparation
Feeling nervous before an important game, competition, or performance is normal. However, excessive anxiety can interfere with concentration, confidence, decision-making, and an athlete’s ability to perform at their usual level.
Sports therapy can help athletes identify patterns of negative thinking, understand their emotional responses to pressure, and develop strategies for managing anxiety.
Therapeutic work may focus on improving confidence, concentration, emotional regulation, coping skills, and the ability to recover mentally after mistakes or disappointing performances.
Injury & Recovery
An athletic injury can affect much more than physical performance.
Athletes who are unable to participate may experience frustration, sadness, anxiety, isolation, or a loss of identity. There may also be concerns about losing a position, disappointing teammates, missing opportunities, or whether they will perform at the same level when they return.
Sports therapy can provide emotional support throughout the recovery process and help athletes manage the psychological challenges associated with rehabilitation and returning to competition.
Preventing Athletic Burnout
Training schedules, competitions, academics, travel, work, relationships, and expectations can create significant pressure.
Over time, athletes may experience emotional exhaustion, decreased motivation, irritability, declining performance, or loss of enjoyment in their sport.
Therapy can help athletes recognize signs of burnout, develop healthier boundaries, improve stress management, and establish a sustainable balance between athletic goals and overall well-being.
More Than an Athlete
For many athletes, their sport becomes an important part of their identity. While that connection can be positive, challenges can arise when self-worth becomes primarily connected to performance, statistics, scholarships, playing time, or winning.
Sports therapy encourages athletes to recognize their strengths and identity both within and beyond their sport.
This can be especially valuable for student-athletes navigating academics, relationships, college decisions, scholarships, graduation, career planning, or the eventual transition away from competitive athletics.
