PTSD
Support for moving forward after trauma.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after living through or witnessing something frightening, dangerous, or overwhelming. It is not a sign of weakness. It is the mind and body continuing to react as if the danger is still present, long after it has passed.
At Alliance Wellness Solutions, we approach trauma with care, patience, and respect for your pace. Support is available in person at our Towson office and by telehealth anywhere in Maryland.
Understanding trauma
Trauma can follow a single event, such as an accident, an assault, or a sudden loss. It can also build over time through ongoing experiences such as abuse, violence in the home or community, or repeated exposure to distressing events through work. Many people go through difficult experiences and recover on their own. For others, the effects linger and begin to shape everyday life.
Signs of PTSD
Symptoms often fall into four groups:
- Reliving the experience: unwanted memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
- Avoidance: staying away from people, places, conversations, or feelings that bring back reminders
- Changes in mood and thinking: guilt, shame, numbness, losing interest in things, or feeling disconnected from others
- Feeling on edge: being easily startled, irritable, constantly on guard, or having trouble sleeping and concentrating
When these symptoms last more than a month and affect your relationships, work, or sense of safety, it is worth speaking with a professional. In children and teens, trauma can also show up as changes in behavior, sleep, or schoolwork, or as clinginess and new fears.
Experiences that can lead to trauma
- Accidents and injuries
- Physical or sexual assault
- Abuse or neglect
- Domestic or community violence
- Sudden loss of a loved one
- Medical trauma
- First-responder and military experiences
PTSD often appears alongside depression, anxiety, or difficulties with sleep, and part of our assessment is understanding how these connect for you.
How we help
Care begins with a conversation, and you decide how much to share and when. There is no expectation to describe everything that happened at your first visit. From there, we work with you on a plan that may include the following.
Therapy
Therapy offers a safe space to make sense of what happened and how it continues to affect you. Over time, it can help you understand your reactions, manage distressing memories and triggers, rebuild a sense of safety, and reconnect with the people and activities that matter to you. We move at a pace that feels manageable.
Medication management
For some people, medication can ease symptoms such as anxiety, low mood, or sleep problems, making daily life and therapy more manageable. Our psychiatric nurse practitioners can evaluate whether medication may help and follow up with you regularly.
Group support
Connecting with others who have had similar experiences can reduce isolation and shame. Clinician-led groups offer support and practical tools in a shared setting.
What to expect
- Reach out. Request a consult online or call our office. Our team will answer your questions and help you find a time that works.
- Your first appointment. We take the time to listen and to understand your concerns, your history, and your goals, at your pace.
- A plan that fits. Together, we decide on next steps, whether that is therapy, medication management, or both.
- Ongoing support. We check in on your progress and adjust your care as your needs change.
Healing is possible
Trauma can make the world feel unpredictable, and reaching out can feel risky. You do not need to be ready to talk about everything, only ready to take one small step. With the right support, many people find the past begins to loosen its hold on the present.
Maybe it’s time to talk to someone.
